The Dos and Don’ts of Cervical Spondylosis

Cervical Spondylosis is a very common age-related condition, also known as cervical osteoarthritis and neck arthritis. Patients suffering from this condition experience excruciating pain and discomfort while doing activities that affect the joints in the neck. A common condition, Cervical Spondylosis can be induced by a number of factors including stress on the neck area, neck related injuries, incorrect posture, smoking and substance abuse, and even leading a sedentary lifestyle. Heredity is also a factor in certain cases.(Information credit: Getsavvi.co.za)

There are various factors that contribute to the deteriorating condition of the cartilage, tissues, and bones of the cervical spine, resulting in this condition. Symptoms can also vary from person to person, where some may experience mild neck pain, chronic pain around shoulder blades, stiffness in the necks etc. Others can experience symptoms such as muscle weakness, headaches, pain in the arms and in the fingers and a loss of balance. Most people over the age of 65 are susceptible to developing this condition, although individuals far younger than that can also contract it.  There are, however, some simple positive practices to tackle this condition, as well as some practices to avoid.

Dos

  • Regular neck exercises are a must for maintaining strength, flexibility, and range of motion in the area.

  • While sleeping, always use firm mattresses and a relatively thinner pillow.

  •  While getting up from a reclining position, always make sure you turn to one side before rising.

  • For severe cases, individuals are advised to wear a cervical collar during the day.

  • Low impact aerobic activities like walking can have a positive effect on neck movements.

  • When suffering from acute pain, a proper period of rest to immobilize the neck is advised.

  • Never skip prescribed medications.

Don’ts

  • Sitting in stressful or incorrect postures for prolonged periods can aggravate the condition.

  • It is advised to avoid exercises such as Heavyweight lifting.

  • Travelling plans should be made so as to avoid jerking on bad roads.

  • Doing an activity for prolonged periods of time such as driving, computer operations etc can have a negative impact on the muscles of the neck. Thus, taking occasional breaks are necessary.

  • The habit of holding a cellphone on one shoulder while talking over the phone should be stopped.

  • High impact aerobics like sprinting should be avoided, as jerking has a direct effect on the neck muscles, aggravating the condition.

  • Improper sleep habits like sleeping with several pillows positioned below the neck or shoulder should be stopped.

  • Lying flat on one’s stomach can strain the neck muscles, resulting in a relapse.

Cervical Spondylitis is thus a chronic condition that can seriously affect one’s quality of life. However, if the above recommendations are followed, individuals can alleviate their condition to a great extent. However, if the pain is lingering for a long time, it is always advised to consult a physician.
